Soyuz: The Research Network for Postsocialist Cultural Studies
Soyuz is broadly conceived as a group of anthropologists and other scholars working in postsocialist studies. It is formally constituted as the Post-Communist Cultural Studies Interest Group of the American Anthropological Association (AAA) and is also recognized as an official unit of the Association for Slavic, East European Studies and Eurasian Studies (ASEEES, formerly AAASS). We gather at AAA and ASEEES meetings in North America and here on the web to distribute information on our projects.

Announcements
Announcements are posted from messages sent to the Soyuz listserv. To post an additional announcement, please email Soyuz webmaster Nikolina Zenović (nzenovic [at] iu.edu).
As a registered interest group of the American Anthropological Association, Soyuz has the privilege of sponsoring a panel at the AAA Annual Meeting.
Soyuz is now seeking submissions for its sponsored panel at the 2026 AAA Annual Meeting. The panel may be organized as a discussion panel (roundtable) or as an oral presentation (traditional panel), as defined on the AAA submission guidelines. The topic of the panel is open, but we are particularly interested in submissions that address any of the following topics, broadly defined:
- global post-socialism(s)
- the relationship between post-socialism(s)and post-colonialism(s)
- war, especially in relation to any of the above.
To be considered, please send the following information via email to jjcarro3@ncsu.edu and rachok@unc.edu no later than Wednesday April 15.
- Panel title and abstract (up to 300 words)
- The names and roles of all panel participants (including discussants, if applicable)
- If submitting an oral presentation/traditional paper panel: a title and abstract (up to 300 words) for all papers presented
- If submitting a discussion/roundtable: a 1-2 sentence description of the contribution that each panelist is able to provide to the discussion
The selected panel will need to follow the normal submission process and provide all panel information through the AAA submission portal by April 29. Selected panelists will be notified directly of their sponsored status (which, barring unforeseen circumstances, guarantees acceptance at the conference) prior to April 29.
Please reach out to Jennifer Carroll directly, at jjcarro3@nscu.edu, with any questions.
